Karnowski residential mound is located in the North-West of the village of Karanovo, located 10 km from the town of Nova Zagora. The mound is located near the spurs of the small ridge Syrena Mountain. The first studies of Khranovskogo residential mound were conducted in 50-ies of the 20 century.
Karnowski is one of the largest residential mounds in Bulgaria. Its height is 13 m, length – 250 m and a width of 150 meters. Studied only 1700 square meters of the mound, but most of its archaeological value is disclosed. Were investigated cultural layers 12, 4 m thick, which gave the possibility to determine the sequence of formation of layers, make a periodization of the cultural layers of the individual layers and make Karnovsky chronological scheme. Archaeologists have traced all prehistoric periods, from the Neolithic to the bronze age. At the moment finds discovered in the mound, exhibited in museums of Nova Zagora and Sofia.
In the North-East of the village (1, 3 km) it was found fortified settlement. There was located a public building having the form of a Basilica and a necropolis, which consisted of 16 barrows (Vernikovy, East, Long, etc.). This place has been excavated in 1976-1998.
In 2008, archaeologists explored the East mound, where in 2009 it was discovered the vaulted tomb of a wealthy noble Thracian (1st century ad), built of stone. It found two silver Cup, depicting the God Eros, glass vessels, coins, gold rings, silver brooches and combat gear. There archaeologists have found a fighting chariot on 4 wheels, to which were harnessed two horses. It is made of wood, bronze and leather, wheel diameter – 1, 2 m. On site open now is the chariot and the copy overhead decorations for horses of bronze. Also in the Eastern mound was much smaller finds of Roman provincial art: pottery, bowls made of silver with gilding and other items.
