Cape Sukhumi is located in the northwestern part of the city limits and Sukhumi Bay, deeply cutting into the Black sea. On the banks of convenient bays were Greek, Roman and Byzantine settlements. With regular development of navigation on the Cape was put a lighthouse warning sailors about the coastal rocks and simultaneously served as a navigation mark, especially at night and in bad weather.
Specialists of the famous French firm Ernest Couin produced signal design of riveted steel sheet. Construction on the Cape stone tower with an internal cast iron spiral staircase lasted about five months. With the help of a powerful screw piles for the Foundation of the lighthouse was cemented in a sandy soil of the Cape and mounted lighting tower, and in 1861 the oil lamp of the lighthouse lit up the waters of the Sukhumi Bay. Set later a more powerful lamp and reflector system dismantled and taken by the Turks in 1887, but after six months the functionality of the lighthouse was restored.
