The modern art Museum – the city Museum, housed in a neoclassical building of the former commandant of the garrison of the fortress of Stettin, built in the fourth quarter of the eighteenth century. Until the end of the Second world war the building served as the military authorities. In the seventies of the twentieth century the house was transferred to the National Museum of Szczecin, and then there was opened the Museum of modern art.

Its main task, the Museum considers the dissemination and promotion of contemporary art through self-directed projects of Polish and foreign art, as well as by conducting temporary exhibitions, organized in cooperation with other agencies. The first collection was assembled long before the opening of the Museum in 1948. It includes a collection of works by artists of the nineteenth and early twentieth century, with emphasis on marine subjects and portraits. In addition to paintings in the collection there are also sculptures.

Museum of contemporary art is proud of its rich collection of paintings, which includes works by the great artists of the century, including Jan Matejko, Peter Mihailovskogo, Jacek Malczewski, Konrad Krzyzanowski, Tadeusa Makovsky. Also, the Museum displays the works of masters of the twentieth century: Peter Weiss, Jerzy nowosielski, Isabella Gostowski and many others.

The Museum is coordinating an international programme Mare Articum and participates in the organization of the Baltic Biennale of contemporary art.
