Stone staircase - one of the attractions of the city Taganrog, she combines Greek street Pushkinskaya embankment of the city. The staircase was built with funds from a wealthy Greek philanthropist, merchant Gerasimos Fyodorovich Depaldo, according to his spiritual will, from December, 1822, where it is stated: "to Build a descent to the exchange between the houses of the court adviser Kovalevskogo and Greek Hristo to allocate 15 thousand".
The idea of building stairs gave Lieutenant Colonel Peter Ivanovich Macedonian, Taganrog architect of the early NINETEENTH century, the author of the project is considered to be the architect Franz Boffo, and supervised the construction work engineer Anisimov. So, by September, 1823 Stone staircase was ready.
Steps and slabs of the frieze were made from local Sarmatian limestone, they descended towards the Gulf for over 113 meters, divided by thirteen broad areas, with a General width of steps 5, 4 meters to 7 meters below. Thus, when viewed from the top step, the stairs seemed to be the same width, and if the bottom, there was visible a clear perspective. Later this technique was used in the construction of the Potemkin stairs in Odessa. For a long time the ladder was known popularly as Depaldo.
During the Crimean war in 1855 the stairs trying to climb in the city a group of British sailors, Cossack sotnia led by centurion Ermolova gun fire stopped the British.
With each site offers amazing views of the Bay, to the vessels at anchor and docking in the harbour. This majestic panorama has left a great mark on the life and work of the famous inhabitants of Taganrog and guests: writer A. P. Chekhov, the poet N. F. Shcherbina, actor of Moscow art THEATRE L. A. Vishnevsky, artist Sinode-Popov, who was the first masters painted Stone staircase.
In the fall of 1879 staircase was first planted. And since 1934, it started a major reconstruction. Then it was planned to install up to three dozen copies of antique sculptures, such as "the Boy, taking out a splinter", "Boy with goose", "Aphrodite Japanska" and others. The reconstruction was finished by the 1st of may, 1935, after completing the main work, then I installed 30 of Greek and Roman vases and 8 sculptures, installed lighting fixtures and floodlights, and placed at the bottom of the garden, where rough trade soft drinks and ice cream. Stairs became a favorite place for townspeople and tourists.
Though not without its missteps: apparently, not having examined in the original project, the builders have narrowed down the ladder to 5 – 5, 4 meters throughout the descent, which broke the original principle of a spatial perspective. Now the top and bottom of the stairs are the same width, unlike a properly designed previously with a significant design difference in their width.
In 1945, at the top of the stairs he built an octagonal pedestal with a sundial.
Now the ladder consists of 14 marches and 188 steps, number of steps in the March different from 4 to 19. Known Taganrog children's author I. D. Vasilenko has devoted Stone stairs and sundial one of the stories. Since 2003 in the city Day in Taganrog is the annual race up the Stone stairs.
In 2006, the limestone steps were replaced with granite, which no doubt will continue the life of this remarkable creation, though changed its historic flavor. In 2012, Stone staircase was included in the regional stage of all-Russian competition "the Miracle of Russia 2012".
