The ancient settlement of Photo: the Ancient settlement of "Great Bulgars"

One of the most unique and most valuable landmarks of Russia is located in the surroundings of the little town of Bulgarians in the Republic of Tatarstan. The ancient settlement of "Great Bulgars", formed in the tenth century, was one of the largest cities of the Volga Bulgars to the thirteenth century and in the fourteenth century (after the destruction of Bilyarsk) became the center of Bulgar territory.

Bulgar settlement is part of the state historical-architectural Museum-reserve and contains nine of the most ancient monuments of architecture and epigraphic monuments, Dating from the ninth century. The ancient city was destroyed and rebuilt several times. The first Bulgar conquest occurred in 1236 during the Western campaign, a pan-Mongol, the second destruction of the Volga Bulgarians inflicted Bulat-Timur in 1361 and razed the city Governor Vasily II Theodore Motley in 1431 Stone building, partially extant, were built in the 13th and 14th centuries, during the reign of the Muslim Berke and formation of Bolgar as a center of Volga Bulgaria.

The main attraction of the Fort is the mosque, built in the mid thirteenth century and represents the architectural ensemble, which connects the Khan's Palace with a Large minaret. A feature of the mosque are fighting corner towers (the building was in the center of the ancient settlement). The Northern mausoleum are epigraphic monuments and tombstones (9th-14th centuries), in a Small minaret visitors can climb the symbolic 40 steps of the spiral staircase and visit the Khan's tomb. Within the city there are the ruins of the White chamber (13-W.) with heating stoves and water supply, the legendary Black chamber, where Khan's judgment seat, and the Eastern mausoleum. Around the Bulgar settlement can be considered preserved defensive rampart and ditch, and with one of the parties - ancient buildings of the Small town.
