The island of Whitsunday is an archipelago consisting of 74 Islands of various sizes off the coast of Queensland, part of the Great Barrier reef. The name of the archipelago can be translated as "island of the Holy Trinity". Only 8 of the Islands of the archipelago are inhabited.
Whitsunday is one of the most popular in Australia places. Most of the Islands are national parks and reserves, and the main attractions for tourists Snorkelling and diving at the coral reefs, pristine beaches, especially the beach of Whitehaven (Whitehaven Beach) on the island of Whitsunday, and clear aquamarine water. White Whitehaven beach stretches for 7 km and is often portrayed in tourist brochures on Australia, and show in the commercials. Every year the island is visited by over half a million tourists.
The name of the Islands gave James cook, sailing along the June 4, 1770. He was amazed by the beauty of these places and decided to name the island after the day on which he saw them. Cook thought it was Pentecost, the seventh Sunday after Easter. It later turned out that the calendar cook was wrong, and June 4, 1770 was the Day of the Holy Trinity. However, the name is already well established for the Islands.
Around the Islands are always full of luxury yachts, bringing "rich and famous" from across Australia. And those who are still saving up for his own yacht, bringing one of the many ferries leaving from the town of Airlie.
Before tourism became the main source of income for the local population, the Islands were engaged in logging – and this was done as the aboriginal population of the Islands, and later appeared "white" settlers. Today this industry is not a trace (except for the old dam, which was used sawmill in the Bay Comill on the island of Whitsunday).
The Islands can be reached by plane, which takes off from the airport of mainland town of Proserpine and lands on Hamilton island. And from there by boat to any of the dozens of Islands.
