Museum Sculptures at sea" is located in the Primorsky district of the Hague. It was opened in 1994 collectors Theo and Lida Soltanali. This is the only Museum in the Netherlands, which specializes only in sculpture.
The Museum presents contemporary sculpture, both Dutch and foreign. Three times a year (sometimes more often) the curators of the Museum are held in the main hall of the Museum a new exhibition. It can be as thematic exhibitions and exhibitions of one of the sculptor. The Museum sees its mission to "through various forms and materials to Express feelings and experiences of man."
Since 2004, the Museum building houses the Institute of sculpture, a research Institute dealing with issues of contemporary sculpture. In the Museum visitors can use the library of the Institute.
The Museum building itself deserves special attention. It was built by architect WIM Quist. Before giving the construction permit, the municipality of the Hague demanded: "the Museum should not be visible from the dunes". Therefore, almost the entire Museum is underground, with terraces on the surface of the dunes, which are also not visible in the distance. The Museum also is not visible from the Boulevard and the roof of the Museum can see the sea, but do not see any Boulevard or the beach of Scheveningen. As a result, the Museum is very difficult to find, though there are pointers. The building of glass and concrete is located on several levels, light comes from different places. Part of the Museum exposition is located on the open areas (in bad weather visitors get rain). The Museum has a cafe and a bookstore.
In 2004-2010 on the Boulevard was an outdoor garden sculptures by American artist Tom Otterness. Funny figures especially pleasing to children.
