In the South-Western part of Crete, on the Libyan coast is the resort town of Paleochora. It is located along the 11-kilometer coastal line, including a small Peninsula between two picturesque bays. Paleochora is a picturesque town, famous for the hospitality of the locals. The region's economy is based on agriculture (mainly tomatoes and olive oil) and tourism.
I believe that modern Paleochora is built on the site of the ancient city Calamity. As the local attractions you can visit several old churches, which have preserved Venetian and Byzantine wall painting. Also in Paleochora, on a small hill, to the present day the ruins of the Venetian fortress. Fortification, known as the "castle of Selino", was first built in 1278 under the guidance of the Venetian General Marino Gradenigo. During its long history the castle was repeatedly destroyed. In 1332 after the uprising of the Cretans, the fortress was heavily damaged and was rebuilt 1335. Beside her, the Venetians built a small settlement. In 1539, the castle was destroyed by pirates and only restored in 1595. In 1645 the Turks captured the city and reconstructed fortress in its own way, but it did not last long and in 1653 was destroyed again. For a long time the area was empty, and a new wave of settlement began only in 1866.
Its fame as a resort of Paleochora began to take over in the 1970's, when this place was chosen by hippies. Today seaside town famous for its excellent beaches with crystal clear water on one side of the Peninsula is a sandy beach and a pebble) and picturesque natural landscapes. Also fairly well developed infrastructure of the city. There are services such as a medical center, pharmacies, police station, banks, post office, customs, etc.
In Palaiochóra good selection of comfortable hotels and cosy apartments, a variety of shops, numerous restaurants, taverns and cafes with great local cuisine. A dynamically developing resort every year attracts a large number of tourists from different countries.
