It is 18 km long gorge is the largest in Europe and is famous for its amazing beauty. In some places the passage is barely three feet wide, and the vertical walls are 600 meters in height. At the bottom of the gorge runs a rapid stream.

The gorge was declared a national Park: in addition to hundreds of rare species of flora, rare species of birds and mammals, including KRI-KRI, Cretan mountain goats with twisted horns.

The passage through the gorge is officially allowed from may to October. Halfway down the gorge is the eponymous village with traditional Cretan houses and the Church of Mary of Egypt.
