Su Nuraxi, also known as su Nuraxi di Barumini, is the largest Nuragic monument of Sardinia, situated near the town of Barumini and 1997 included in the UNESCO world Cultural Heritage site by UNESCO. In the Sardinian dialect of "su Nuraxi" is simply a "Nuraghe" - type megalithic towers, spread across the island from the late 2nd Millennium BC

The main element of the complex is a three-storey tower Nuraghe 18, 6 meters, built of basalt blocks between 17th and 13th centuries BC In the bronze age around it were erected four towers, connected by a stone wall with a platform at the top (not extant). All the towers out of the courtyard, and well implemented.

Scientists do not agree that the Nuraghe was used only for military purposes: it is believed that these megalithic structures could perform the functions of a fortress, refuge, some semblance of a Parliament – the place where was made a common decision, and even the temple in which dwelt the head of the settlement.

Near the Central tower of su Nuraxi in the mid 20th century by the archaeologist Giovanni Lilliu were found the ruins of a fortified settlement, consisting of about 50 houses, which were built of massive boulders with a dry masonry and had a conical wooden roof. Originally these houses were one room, but later the inner space began to divide into sectors. Among the buildings found one of the most significant is the hut, intended for meetings of local residents, in which were the symbols of the worship of a certain deity.

In the 7th century BC the Central tower collapsed, and then, in the heyday of the Carthaginians, it was restored, and under the Romans abandoned again. Only in 1950 began a large-scale archaeological excavations under the guidance of Giovanni Lilliu, which lasted seven years. When it was discovered household utensils, weapons, utensils and ornaments. In 1997, UNESCO recognized the importance of su Nuraxi, including him in the list of UNESCO world Cultural Heritage. In addition, this position plays a key role in the study of the history of Sardinian civilization, as done here findings formed the basis of the chronology of prehistory of Sardinia.
