The ancient monastery of Agios Ioannis Lampadistis is located in the small village of Kalopanayiotis, located deep in the mountains of Troodos. Its appearance is connected with the tragic story of 22-year-old local boy named John. The young man was eager to leave the monastery and devote his life to the service of God, but it tried to force him to marry. However, he stubbornly refused to marriage, and eventually offended the bride tried to poison him, poured his poison into food. Fortunately, John survived, but completely lost his sight. Blinded, but not lost the faith of the young man still managed to fulfill his dream and became a monk. He is credited with created many miracles during his life – he cast out demons from people and return the water to the parched springs and rivers. After death he was canonized.
In the chapel of the monastery of Agios Ioannis Lampadistis still kept his relics, which come to worship pilgrims from all over the world. Because people believe that visiting this place helps to strengthen faith. In addition, there is also kept his skull, hidden in a silver case.
It is believed that in honor of St. John was built this monastery, but actually Agios Ioannis Lampadistis is only rebuilt the temple of the Holy Heracleides.
At the moment in the monastery the monks do not live. Only once a year, on the day of the death of the Saint (October 4), there is conducted the funeral service.
Some time ago it was turned into a kind of ecclesiastical Museum. There you can see the well preserved Church plate of those times, art and lots of interesting things that were created in the period from XII to XIX century. As well as the main exhibit of the Museum are very walls of the monastery are decorated with beautiful frescoes of the XII century.
