In the period of iconoclasm in the Troodos mountains was established many monasteries and churches. This is because it is in the mountains it was very easy to hide from persecution and harassment. There the monks often hid the most valuable icons.
So began the history of the highest Orthodox monastery of Cyprus, which bears the name of Trooditissa. It is located near the nature reserve "cedar valley". It is believed that a monk whose name, unfortunately, has not survived, was brought to Cyprus icon of the Mother of God Trooditissa from Asia Minor. Ascetic settled in a small cave near the place where now stands the monastery. After his death, the icon miraculously was found in his skete – a local shepherd noticed a certain glow on the mountain and took with him his comrades, decided to see what this strange light. People climbed the mountain in the cave and saw a marvelous icon, and decided on the spot to build a temple. But the legend says that every time the villagers began to build a Church building collapsed. One night one of them had an angel, which indicated a new spot for the temple. It was there that he was built, and there I had found the icon. And later he appeared next to him the monastery.
The first mention of the Church in written sources date back only to the fourteenth century. At the end of the XVI century it was completely destroyed. Survived only the icon of the Mother of God. As for the modern Church and the monastery buildings were built in the period from XVIII to XX century.
So, a new Church was built in 1731, when it was built at the school. Thanks to the patronage of wealthy citizens he got rich utensils and a new gilded iconostasis. In 1999, the Church walls were re-painted by the best artists of Cyprus.
This place is quite popular among tourists, and among the pilgrims to pray often famous miraculous icon Trooditissa childless couples come to ask the blessed mother to the baby.
