The natural Park of Monte Subasio" situated on the territory of the namesake mountain range to the North-East of Assisi and dominates the whole valley of the Valle Umbra from a height of 1300 meters above sea level. The word "Subasio" means "the hill of Assisi," because the city and the mountain live in some sort of close symbiosis since antiquity. The entire historic center of Assisi lies within the Park area.
The city was built of pink stone, which he took on Monte Subasio, and over the centuries of its history it has received from the mountains all the necessary construction materials, timber, agriculture products, thus affecting the geomorphology and vegetation of the mountain.
The flora of Monte Subasio Park consists of three zones: the lower is characterized by olive groves, which stretch from Spello to Assisi on one side and from Costa di TREX to Armitano and San Giovanni. In the middle belt you can find different kinds of oaks, hornbeam, flowering ash, maple, beech and Holly. Finally, the third zone to the top is represented by pastures and Eastern slopes of the mountains stand out for their toughness.
Although hunting is prohibited in the Park for several decades, the fauna here is very poor: occasionally there are wolves, and in the mid-1960s, there were nesting Peregrines and quail. Today in the Park you can see partridges, wild cats, squirrels, feral pigeons, magpies, jays, hedgehogs, foxes, Martens and wild boars. On the Eastern slopes of Monte Subasio nesting Buzzards, hawks and owls.
All roads crossing the Park, linking the historic towns of Assisi, Spello, Nocera, Umber and Valtopina with other smaller mountain villages. If you depart from Assisi through the gates of the Port Perleche and go on the road of 444 Assisan, then turning right, you can be at the head office of the Park in the town of Piombino. From there you can climb up the Costa di TREX and through Armenzano to get into the fortified village of San Giovanni or the village fortress Collepino.
A picturesque road, with wonderful views, leads tourists to the monastery of the Madonna della Spell near the town of Spello and to the Hermitage Eremo delle Carceri. Along the way you can also stop at the Abbey of San Benedetto, or to stay on the top of Monte Subasio, covered with meadow grasses. Near the top there are Mortaro Grande and Mortar Piccolo, two dry valleys, which in the past was used to produce ice by compacting snow.
In addition to roads in the Park there are many walking routes and trails for horseback riding, which usually begin in Costa di TREX, Armenzano, San Giovanni and Collepino.
