The Church Of St. Trinity Photo: Church Of St. Trinity

Holy Trinity Church is one of the oldest Orthodox churches in the town of Velingrad. In the years of Ottoman rule, the Turkish authorities did not allow the Bulgarian Christians to build temples, so the first Church on this place was built so that she was almost completely hidden underground and had no Windows. But later, when the Turks were tolerant of the religion of the Bulgarians, the growing population of the city has decided to expand the underground Church. Above the building was a small Annex with roof and Windows.

In the early nineteenth century, Velingrad felt the need to construct a new, large Basilica. It was built on the Foundation of the old stone Church in 1816 (at the South entrance there is a memorial plate with the time of construction). In accordance with Turkish laws the Church had no bell tower, it appeared only after the Liberation in 1878. Later the building was also added to the porch.

Two rows of four marble columns divide the interior space of the Basilica of three naves. The walls and vaults of the temple are decorated with paintings with images of Jesus Christ, saints and scenes from the Scriptures. In the middle of the twentieth century the old iconostasis was replaced by a wooden, carved.

In former years the temple was an important religious and educational center, so now he is not only an architectural, but also a significant cultural monument of the town of Velingrad.
