Murano island in the Venetian lagoon, the Islands which are interconnected with bridges. It is located 1, 5 km North of Venice and is the administrative authority. According to the latest census, there resides about 5 thousand people.
The first inhabitants of these places were the Romans. Then, in the 6th century, in their place came the Nations of Altinum and Oderzo. In those years, Murano was a thriving fishing port, here the salt was mined, and ranging from the 11th century, the local population began to move to the modern area of Dorsoduro, and the island began to decline. But at the same time, the hermits of the Camaldolese order was taken by one of the Islands and founded the monastery of San Michele di Murano, which later became the center of education and book printing. Famous cartographer fra Mauro, maps which were of great European explorers and travelers, was a novice of the monastery. In 1810, the year of San Michele di Murano was dissolved and the monks were expelled. Today the former monastery land occupied the main cemetery of Venice.
In 1291, the year has been a turning point in the history of Murano – all glassmakers of Venice were moved to this island. This separation was caused by the desire of the Venetians to protect the secret of the production of glass from its competitors. In addition, the fiery furnaces workshops could cause fires, so they had to be geographically isolated. Interestingly, the glassmakers had the incredible privilege, for example, their daughters could marry Venetian aristocrats, but for the artist it was strictly forbidden to leave Murano. In the 14th century, the glass produced in Murano, began to export, and for some time the island became a major glass factory in Europe.
