In 1630 Venice was struck by a terrible plague, which killed many people. And then the Senate decided that if we manage to get rid of the epidemic, in honor of the virgin Mary will build a huge temple. With the plague managed to cope and Senate announced a competition to design the Church.
Young Baldassarre Longhena won the competition and the work was begun in 1631, but suddenly had to face great difficulties. Primarily the ground, unable to bear the weight, began to settle down and Longhena was forced to strengthen his scoring pile. But even before the construction of the Central dome, it appeared that the walls are not ready to bear the weight, and then a young architect was forced to rise to maintain the original drum and bizarre "snails". When in 1687 the Church was consecrated, it's been five years since the death of Baldassarre Longhena.
Simple and impressive interior octagonal shape with six side chapels, on arches which is mounted the drum of the dome. Marble statue on the Central altar depicts "the Plague, escaping from the virgin Mary" created by Giusto Le Court. This Church houses the works of Tintoretto and Titian.
