The historical Museum is one of the oldest scientific and cultural institutions in the city of Vidin. This public is an important centre, which aims at the preservation, processing and promotion of cultural and historical values.

The Foundation of the Museum in Vidin region dates back to 1910, when it was created by the Archaeological community and the first Museum collection. After the war, in the mid 20-ies of the last century, the archaeological community "Bononia" the beginning of the active work of collecting materials and under the guidance of a teacher Vassil Atanasov organized in the old Turkish-mail the exhibition, which featured ancient coins and samples of national embroidery.

Now the Historical Museum in Vidin takes a worthy place among the other national museums in Bulgaria. A success ongoing research activities, constantly replenished Museum funds (now they are more than 63 thousand exhibits).

The Museum exposition is divided into several main thematic divisions. The sections on Archaeology (with subkeys, "Prehistory", "Antiquity", "middle Ages"), "Bulgaria XV-XIX centuries", "the New history", etc. since the middle of last century, located in the renovated main building of the "Konak", which is a monument of architecture. Here is a rich collection of objects belonging to different historical periods. In a separate exhibition room is the numismatic collection, which includes more than 30 thousand coins.

Ethnographic exhibition since 1969 is in the building "Crystalate barracks". Structure intended for the Bulgarian military, was built in 1801. Part of the Museum complex is the "Baba Vida is the only one in Bulgaria is fully preserved medieval fortress.

The library Fund of the Museum has about 4600 volumes.
