The Church Of St. Michael, dedicated to the Archangel Michael, is one of the oldest churches in Vienna. Located in the Inner district of the city on Michaelerplatz square.

In 1221 the monks of St. Michael's laid Basilica. In the 14th century the Church was enlarged, and two centuries later rebuilt in the Gothic style. Almost five centuries of St Michael's Church served as a parish Church together with the Scottish monastery and St. Stephen's Cathedral. The following changes occurred in 1725, when the Church was given a Baroque appearance. And in 1792 was promoted restructuring of the Western façade.

The interior of the Church gives the impression of strict building. Central and Northern chapels of the choir were reconstructed in the Baroque style. Stucco reliefs in the main chapel were taken by Karl Georg Merville. The main altar was created in 1782 by Jean Baptiste de Awrang. It is decorated with monumental alabaster in the Rococo style with the sculpture "Falling angels" (1782), Italian sculptor Lorenzo Mattielli. The sculpture symbolizes the gentleness of angels to the altar.

The Central altar is adorned with Byzantine icon of the virgin belonging to the Cretan school. The altar in the North chapel is decorated with the work of Franz Anton Maulbertsch "Adoration", and the South chapel has retained its medieval appearance. The triumphal arch dates from the 14th century.

The organ, made by Johann David Sieber in 1714, is the largest organs in Vienna Baroque. Mozart's Requiem was performed here for the first time at a memorial service for the composer on 10 December 1791.

The present façade was built in 1792 in the neoclassical style typical of the style of the era of the reign of Emperor Joseph II. Above the entrance, on top of the pediment sculptures are executed by the Italian sculptor Lorenzo Mattielli.

St Michael's Church has a large crypt. Only the nobles and rich citizens could be buried here. Revenue from these sales was used to support the Church. Because of the special climatic conditions and a constant temperature in the crypt, the bodies were perfectly preserved. Hundreds of mummified corpses, some of which are buried in beautiful outfits and wigs in open coffins available for viewing.
