Braniewo is a city in North-Eastern Poland, in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship. Braniewo is located about 35 km North-East of elbląg and 55 kilometers South-West of Kaliningrad, five kilometers from the Vistula lagoon.

It is known that the city was named in honor of Bishop Bruno von Shaumburg who accompanied king Ottokar II in 1254 and 1267, in the Crusades of the Teutonic knights in Prussia.

City privileges Braniewo received in 1284, and in twelve years there was built a Franciscan monastery. Braniewo became a member of the Hanseatic League, which actively flourished. The city remained part of the monastic state of the Teutonic order. During the Livonian war Braniewo was occupied by Sweden for several years. Ethnically German, Polish politically, and primarily Catholic town was annexed to Prussia in 1772. In 1871 he became part of the newly created German Empire. In the late nineteenth - early twentieth centuries Braniewo was the leading research centre.

During the Second world war the city was occupied by the red Army and suffered heavy destruction. German residents were either evacuated before the Red Army arrived, either killed in the fighting.

Now Braniewo is a successful Polish city, which attracts tourists. The main attractions of Braniewo include: Church of Saint Catherine, St. Peter's Basilica 1343, the gate of the former Episcopal Palace, the Church of the Holy cross, the remains of city walls and the train station.
