National gallery of Armenia is the main Museum of fine arts of the country. The gallery is located in Yerevan in the Republic square and is part of the Museum complex. The art gallery is located on the top floors of the building, the lower two floors of the building are reserved for the National history Museum of Armenia.

The reason for creating the gallery was opened in 1921 at the State Museum Department of art. During 1930 and 1950, the Foundation of the gallery was enriched with works from GMP, the GOE and other museums. The meeting was also expanded by purchases of the Museum itself. In 1935 the Department of art received the status of a Museum. In 1947 he was given the official name of the State picture gallery of Armenia. A year later, the building underwent a major reconstruction. In 1978, located in the town square of the Republic the main array of buildings of the art gallery has added an eight-story structure, designed for exhibitions.

In 1991, Armenia declared independence. In the same year, the State art gallery was renamed the National gallery of Armenia, after which there began restoration work. Its doors to the gallery opened in may 2004, showing visitors new exhibits.

To date, the Fund of the gallery features more than 20 thousand different pieces of art. Most of the collection of the picture gallery of Armenia is Armenian art. The classical period of art is represented by works by Aivazovsky, A. hovnatanian, G. Bashindzhagyan and V. Surenyants, as well as the works of famous artists of the XX century – E. Tadevosyan, G. Yakulov, M. Saryan, A. Gyurjyan, A. Kojoyan and many others. Special attention is driven collection of Russian art from icons of XVI–XVII centuries, the works of famous Russian artists of XVIII–XX centuries, etc. of Western European art is represented by works of Jan van Goyen, F. Guercino, E. Falcone, A. Monticelli, T. Rousseau, etc. Separate hall of the National gallery of Armenia is dedicated to the art of Ancient Greece and Ancient Egypt. The culture of the Eastern countries – Iran, China and Japan presents valuable examples of decorative art.
