The town hall in Aachen is not just a monument, but also a building, which to this day plays a huge role in city life. As you know, the building is close to the equally famous Aachen Cathedral, making a magnificent architectural ensemble, which is listed in the list of the most valuable monuments of Germany.
If you look into the depths of Aachen's history, we can see that the town hall was formerly located in the so-called Grasshouse, but in the 14th century it was decided to build a new building because the city received a new free status. Old town hall could not take a huge receptions, and even more, could not become a place of coronations. Start of construction of the new city hall occurred in 1330, and the building was built during the nineteen years that is not too long, considering the size. It is also known that the Foundation for the construction of the town hall served as destroyed by the time the Palace of the Emperor Charles.
Several fires that have occurred in the fate of this building, destroyed the roof of a tower, but each time the town hall was restored. In the 18th century the town hall was substantially rebuilt and restored, and it became the highlight of the frescoes and the special panels of wood. Next, the 19th century also brought with it many changes, because the hall was constantly rebuilt, adding rooms. The goal of these activities was the return of the Gothic traits that were lost previously.
The famous statues of kings in the company of various traditional symbols of arts and Sciences – fifty sculptures made in stone – appeared on the North facade is also not so long ago, in the mid-19th century. About the same time the murals that have appeared on the walls of the rooms, put his talented hands Alfred Rethel.
Damaged town hall and during the Second world war: in 1943 the building became one of the targets of the bombing. Restoration work was carried out slowly and carefully: we compared all the drawings that were chosen the most authentic, played the most difficult ornaments, renewed frescoes. The process was slow, a complete restoration was completed only by the end of 70-ies.
Today Aachen town hall is one of the brightest business card of the city, monument of architecture and symbolic place for the townspeople. On the square in front of it there are the most significant events, from fairs to sports and competitions. The building itself is not only a Museum, but ordinary offices of the mayor and other officials that govern municipal Affairs in the third Millennium.
