Aarhus is the second largest city in Denmark, situated in the Eastern part of the Jutland Peninsula, on the Bay of Aarhus - Bugg. Being in Aarhus will visit the landmark of the city – Den Gamle by (translated as Old town).
The establishment of this beautiful open air Museum, which is now 75 old houses collected from all over Denmark, started in 1909. Between the buildings is paved curly cobbled streets reminiscent of a labyrinth. The buildings demonstrate the way of life and crafts of the time. Almost all houses are open to visitors. This provides a great opportunity to see the hat, Shoe, toy shops, delicious pastries at the patisserie to visit the pharmacy, the house of a tailor and winemaker, as well as to look at the kitchen utensils of the time.
The majority of houses in the open air Museum, dates from the middle of XVIII – early XIX centuries, the oldest construction of more than 560 years. All of the buildings presented in the Museum are collected from different areas of Denmark. For transportation facilities each brick or piece of wood was dismantled, numbered every detail and re-build a building just at a new location in the Old town of Aarhus. Today, the house to dismantle larger pieces to reassemble it in the Museum. Currently in the historic centre erected houses early XX century: the Mint from Copenhagen and the home of the Anderson period from Odense.
The old town of Aarhus is open to the public all year round. It is particularly interesting to visit the Museum at the end of November when the Christmas fair with an abundance of original products.
