National Park Finke Gorge" is located 138 km West of Alice springs. The name of the Park gave the first European to have visited these places, Stuart McDougall, who was so grateful to his sponsor William Finke, decided to call discovered the river and the surrounding territory in the name of the patron.
The main attraction of the Park, created in the 1920-ies and which covers an area of 456 sq. km, is a spectacular desert oasis of Palm Valley is home to a huge diversity of plant species, including such rare as palm Red Cabbage", growing in abundance here. This palm oasis – the remains of an ancient rain forest that grew here 60 million years ago. From the Finke gorge begins the road along the river to the source Elementa springs national Park Watarrka". The Park has several Hiking trails. The most popular is the 20-minute trek to the viewpoint Calabanga, which offers beautiful views of the rocky amphitheatre, surrounded by steep cliffs. After the trail Naara, you can learn about the local aboriginal myths. And in Palm Valley trail Arancia longer Nolungile twisted among lush, graceful palms, going on a scenic plateau.
Not far from the Park is the town of Hermannsburg – old mission, founded by Lutherans. Many natives were baptized here, including the well-known artist albert Namatjira. Since ancient times, has preserved several historic buildings – school, Church, dining room. In the Church today there is a Museum. South of Hermannsburg begins the road to Finke gorge.
