Samodelka the settlement is located about 40 kilometers from Astrakhan, on the right Bank of the Volga river Old and is a remnant of the medieval city.
The settlement took place with a length of two kilometers and a width of 500-600 meters. Since 1990, it conducted a comprehensive archaeological survey, which found four partially preserved houses and completely preserved dugout. In addition, it was found that there was built a big fortress, presumably destroyed during the campaign of Prince Svyatoslav on the Khazars. After the destruction of the city was reborn and became one of the most developed trading centers on the Great Silk road. In the XIII century the city was conquered by the Mongols. Proof of this are the remains of settlements of the Golden Horde period, found in the upper layers. The story of the settlement was completed during the great flood of the river Volga and to raise the level of the Caspian sea in the fourteenth century, when the water completely flooded it.
It is noteworthy that the settlement itself was discovered by accident. Close to the village Samodelka, and where there is the site, the construction of livestock farms. During the arrangement of the silage pits from the earth was recovered many fragments of brick, pottery, iron, bronze, household items and jewelry, and human bones. School teacher A. Pukhov gathered a respectable collection of ceramics and showed it to the archaeologists, and then began the first studies.
