Selitrennoe the settlement, or Saray-Batu, is located about 150 km from Astrakhan. Saray-Batu founded in 1250 by Khan Batu. The city lasted until 1502 and at one time was a thriving commercial and political center. During the period of greatest development of the city's population was 75 000 people, while, for example, in London and Paris lived twice less people.
Saray-Batu, founded by the grandson of Genghis Khan, distinguished accomplishment. In the middle ages there was a water and sewer system, operated public baths and toilets. The city virtually ceased to exist in the XV century, during the internecine wars of the Golden Horde, then he was captured by Tamerlane. A significant portion of the brick buildings were demolished for the construction of the Astrakhan Kremlin in the XVI century.
In 1710 Peter I ordered to build on the site of the Saray-Batu processing plant nitrate, which was used for the manufacture of gunpowder. Hence the modern name of the settlement. A century later, the stocks of nitrate here has dried up, the plant was closed, but the village continued to exist.
In the middle of the twentieth century began serious archaeological research Selitrennoe of the settlement, which are maintained to this day. During this time scientists have discovered about forty different objects, among which the palaces of the wealthy aristocrats and homes of ordinary people, a mosque, a public bath and much more. Unexplored territory of more than thirty thousand square meters, extracted from the earth pottery, bone carving, glass ware and much more.
In 2003 on the basis of the settlement created by the Museum, and the object is recognized as a historical monument of Federal significance.
