Numismatic Museum in the house of Schliemann is one of the most famous museums in Greece. Gathered in the Museum's collection of rare ancient and modern coins, medals and precious stones is considered one of the best in the world.

The Museum is housed in the mansion of Iliu Melatron (Ilinsky Palace) on Panepistimiou street, in the house of the famous German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann, known for his excavations at Troy, Mycenae, Ithaca and other interesting places in Greece. Schliemann was a very lucky archaeologist, excavations shocked the scientific world.

The Palace was built in the years 1870-1880 Ernst Zieler and is a monument of neoclassical architecture and one of his best works. Particularly impressive mosaic floor, made by Italian craftsmen. In addition to geometric patterns on the floor depicted objects, found by Schliemann in the excavations of Troy and Mycenae.

The Museum was founded in 1834, but was not widely known, even had their own building. At various times, a unique collection exhibited at the University of Athens, Athens Academy and the National archaeological Museum. And only in 1998 the Museum opened its own doors to visitors.

In the collection of the Museum is 600 thousand items. The majority of the exhibits are, of course, coins are rare and of molybdenum alloys. The Museum also features medals, stamps, printing, tools for the manufacture of coins and other artifacts. The collection spans an impressive period of time, starting from the 14th century BC to the modern times. A huge contribution to the collection made private lovers of numismatics, sacrificing their considerable and rarest collection to the state.

In the Museum of numismatics can not only admire the rare artifacts, but also to listen to a brief course on Greek coinage and even get a few lessons learned directly in the hall. Interesting lecture about the history of coinage and ancient methods of counterfeit coins.
