The Museum of Cycladic art Nicholas P. Goulandris is one of the largest museums of Athens. Museum established in 1986 through a private collection of Cycladic and ancient Greek art family Goulandris, one of the most wealthy and noble families of Greece.
Nicholas and Dolly Goulandris began to gather his collection in 1960-XX, with the permission of the Greek government. The collection quickly became known among scholars for its rare exhibits. For the first time the collection was exhibited at the Benaki Museum in 1978. In between 1979 and 1983, the exhibition has been exhibited in major museums and galleries worldwide. After the death of Nicholas Goulandris, his wife donated the collection to the Greek state for the establishment of the Museum.
The Museum's main building is located in the centre of Athens, built in 1985 by the Greek project architect Ioannis Vikelas. Over time, the exposition of the Museum has expanded through donations from collectors and new acquisitions. In 1991, the Museum acquired a new building is a neoclassical mansion of Statutes. With the main building it is connected to by an indoor glass walkway.
The main collection of the Museum is divided into three main areas: Cycladic civilization, namely the early period of the bronze age 3200-2000 BC Cycladic marble figurines, figurines striking in their elegance, simplicity and perfection; ancient Greek art, 2nd Millennium BC to the 4th century A. D.; the art of ancient Cyprus from the Neolithic to the early Christian period, 4th Millennium BC – 6th century BC, This is one of the most comprehensive collections of Cypriot antiquities in the world.
The Museum of Cycladic art created for the purpose of study and promotion of ancient cultures of the Aegean and Cyprus. There are ongoing seminars, lectures, Museum participates in various projects and research. The Museum holds permanent exhibitions. The Museum presents more than 3000 different artifacts.
Special attention is paid to children. Created special programs and workshops, conduct regular workshops and interactive tours for children and their parents.
