May 3, 1837, at the residence of the famous Greek architect As Cleanthes, was founded Athens national University named after Ioannis Kapodistrias (University of Athens). The University bears the name of the first President of Greece. It was previously known as the University of Otto. This is the oldest and one of the most prestigious universities in Greece, was the first University not only Greece, but also of the Balkan Peninsula and the Eastern Mediterranean.

In 1841 classes moved into the new building, designed by Danish architect Theophil von Hansen. In the old building now houses the Museum of history of the University of Athens.

At that time the University had 4 faculties: theology, law, medicine and arts. Faculty of arts includes the study of applied Sciences and mathematics. Interestingly, initially for 52 students taught 33 professors.

An important change in the structure of the University occurred in 1904, then the faculty of arts was divided into two faculties: arts and Sciences. The faculty of science included the pharmaceutical school of the Department of mathematics and physics. In 1919, opened the chemistry Department, and later pharmacy school received the status of the Department.

Today the University is recognized as one of uz's largest research and teaching centres in Europe. It is the second largest higher educational institution in Greece. Training is available for international students.
