Not far from Makronissos – 's most famous beach resort of Ayia NAPA is located not less famous rock tombs. This place has gained prominence and has become popular thanks to built in the XVI century monastery of the Holy virgin Mary. And, according to one version, it was chosen for burial because it was there, in about 500 years before the creation of the first tomb was discovered icon of the virgin.

The cave complex of Makronisos was created in the Greco-Roman period and consists of 19 small tombs carved into the rock, and the sanctuary, a shelter built of rough stones. And next to them are the quarry. Almost all the caves have the same location: from the entrance there are stairs, and almost each of them is a rectangular room, the walls of which there are three or four stone bench. The entrance is usually covered by a plate carved from limestone.

In the middle of XIX century tombs interested in "black archeologists" who simply looted many of the graves. But large-scale official excavations at this site began only at the end of the last century, namely in 1989. Archaeologists have determined that the dead bodies were placed in coffins, which were made of clay, and only then were placed in crypts. Despite the fact that on the territory of Makronisos still under excavation, the entrance to the tombs is completely free. And they are protected by International archaeological society.
