Museum of contemporary art of Barcelona (MACBA) is situated in the El Raval near the centre of contemporary culture of the city. The idea of creating this Museum belongs to the writer and critic Alexander Syria-'en pellicer beach. This idea in its time supported many educated artists, critics and art lovers who have contributed to the creation of the Museum's collection.
Development of a building for the Museum was entrusted to the American architect Richard Meier, who in his project used a simple geometric shape, glass plane, a lot of white, reflective materials. Built in a contemporary modernist style on the interaction of lines, surfaces, colors, and movement through space, the building looks powerful and original, and the interior is simply mesmerizing.
The construction of the Museum began in 1991, and November 28, 1995, the Museum of contemporary art of Barcelona opened its doors to visitors.
The Museum presents works of art from the second half of the twentieth century to the present. The collection includes more than 5,000 works, most of which is a Spanish and Catalan art, there is also a large number of works by artists from around the world. Expressionism, realism, surrealism and other art represented in the Museum collection. The Museum is constantly replenished thanks to private donations and acquisitions specialists of the Museum. The Museum is also a library, which contains books, magazines, publications devoted to art. In the archive are original documents such as letters, personal photographs, books of artists, invitations, posters, brochures, magazines, paper and digital reference books, and audiovisual materials.
The government of Catalonia, the Museum of modern art was declared a national Museum.
