Stagno di Molentargius – pond, spread over an area more than 1 thousand acres in the vicinity of the city of Cagliari in Sardinia. From the East it is bounded by a quarter of a Quart, from the North – Viale Marconi, from the South – Is arenas.
Molentargius is a very ancient pond: it is known that about 100 thousand years ago this place was a dam or a large swamp. In the times of the Phoenicians here began salt production, which lasted during the reign of the Spaniards and later, when Piemonte. Originally, salt was mined by the inhabitants of the surrounding villages – they worked in the summer months. Then, between the 9th and 10th centuries, for all that hard work began to use prisoners. Hence the name of Molentargius: "su momenti" is a small Sardinian donkey, which was loaded with sacks of salt and which was used to hold the boats in the channel.
In the first decades of the 20th century, the method of obtaining salt has been modified – there are vats system in which salt was evaporated sea water pumped in external pools, and from there she slowly pumped into the Central pool. Central basin through the channel of IP arenas water gets in "salt" vats in a Quart, and ends where the process of evaporation of salt.
But Molentargius is not only economic but also ecological value – the whole area of the pond is an ecosystem of great importance. This nature reserve is home to thousands of birds, representing more than 200 species! Despite the identification of the supports in the center of the pond, wastewater discharge, poaching, and the various forms of environmental pollution, the incredible bird diversity of Molentargius continues to astound scientists and tourists. In the near future it is planned to create a natural Park with a Museum and a library. And while on the pond, you can find pink flamingos, Whimbrels, striped black-winged stilts, Plovers, moorhens, marsh Harriers, wild ducks, small purple swamphens and other birds, which inhabit both freshwater and salt water.
