The ensemble of the mosque-madrassa of Sultan Hassan is one of the most famous monuments of Mamluk art. The building is placed on the square in front of the Citadel. It is a religious and architectural complex consisting of the mausoleum of Sultan, mosque, madrasah, hospital and many outbuildings.

From the outside it is perceived as a powerful two-storey block of stone with decorative niches, Windows and two surviving minarets at the corners. High portal, decorated with stalactite vault, opens into a narrow corridor that leads to a closed square courtyard.
