In 1988 at Wat Phra that DOI Chom Thong 108 were located in Urban Poles, representing the concentration of all power in the Chiang Rai and a mini version of the universe. They became known as “the Garden Muang” or “Navel of the City”.

The decision to build was made in order to honor the memory of king Mangra and to celebrate the 60th birthday of king Rama IX, the current ruler of Thailand. Urban poles are a mixture of Buddhist and Hindu ideology. The number 108 symbolizes the universe, the five oceans, and the Central pillars – the highest level of spiritual development, Nirvana.
