The Royal theatre of Denmark - one of the first major national theatres in Denmark, was founded in 1722 under the title "Danish scene". In 1728, due to the massive fires in Copenhagen, the theater building burned down, a long period of time it was restored.

20 years later by king Frederick V issued a decree on the construction of the theatre in the square. The project construction has developed the largest Danish architect of the Rococo Nicholas Ated. July 4, 1748 laid the Foundation, and in December 1748, the construction of the Royal Danish scenes (so called theatre) was completed. With 1749-1871 year the theatre was constantly rebuilt. The main objective of this work was the extension of the auditorium and magnifies the scene. This has led to disastrous consequences. The appearance of the building was ruined, injured and functionality of the theatre. Commission municipal government in 1871 it was decided to build a new theater building. In 1872, the Foundation was laid, and in October, 1874, was held the Grand opening, but the final finishing work ended in 1883 by a grant from the Carlsberg.

At the end of the eighteenth century in the Royal theatre was formed three illustrious team: Opera, ballet and drama. In 1857, based on the theater, the doors opened for students of the ballet school, in 1886 drama school, in 1909 - Opera classes. Currently the theatre has two venues: at one site are dramatic performances, second - operas and ballets.

Today, the theatre Royal is among the popular historical sites.
