Museum is located in the Kiev district of Donetsk city. This Museum is engaged in research and development activities.
The Museum was established in 1924. And the initiator of creation of the Museum was A. A. Olenchenko, who was a teacher of geography in Donetsk mining College. Students Simakov A. and I. Lavrinenko, V. P. deposited in the mineralogical Museum collection, and factory workers of metallurgy gave them to the Museum numismatic collection.
In 1925, the Museum has been allocated to the first room, its area was 50 square meters. Already in 1926 the Museum was opened to the public. Throughout the year, it was visited by 1900 people and the Foundation of the Museum at that time was approximately 2000 different items.
In 1927 the Museum was transferred to a club of a name of Lenin on Larence. In 1938, the Museum was closed during the Stalin Museum of the Revolution. And in 1940 was merged with the Museum of the Revolution of Mariupol.
In the years when Donetsk was occupiamo, most of the collection was lost, and the Museum was hit hard enough. In 1943, the Museum was renovated. In 1950 the Museum moves into a new building. There were five rooms, with a total area of 334 square meters. In the 1950s, the Museum pass some of the funds of the Museum of Mariupol.
In 1954 the Museum moved again in Donetsk oblast library named after Krupskaya N. K. There was a dedicated area of 1000 square meters. During 1970 and 1990, the Museum organized an annual expedition to replenish the Fund of the Museum.
In December 1972, the Museum moved into a separate building, which is located on the street Chelyuskintsev. There it lies to this day. Although originally this building was built for music school, but was transferred to the Museum.
