The Church and convent do Carmo Photo: the Church and convent do Carmo

The Church is located in the historical centre of Evora, a city situated in the East of Portugal, 120 km from Lisbon. Because of the huge number of architectural monuments and other interesting places Evora is also called a city-Museum, which attracts tourists from all over the world. It is worth noting that Evora, namely its historical center, listed as a world heritage site by UNESCO.

The Church of Nossa Senhora do Carmo was previously part of the same monastery. The Carmelite order has appeared in Evora at the beginning of the XVI century. Then for the order, was built the simple Church, which was destroyed during the siege of Evora in the war period Portugal for independence. The order appealed to king Afonso VI with a request to stay for a while in an old mansion that belonged to the family of Jaime de bragança. Until our times, has preserved a wrought iron fence at the main entrance to the Church, and an impressive size with unusual architectural door trim.

The construction of a new Church order was started approximately in 1670, and its inauguration took place in 1691. The portal of the newly built Church is designed in the Baroque style. The facade of the building on the sides decorated with small turrets, one of which is the bell. Inside the Church has a single nave, side chapels designed in the Baroque and Rococo. The main altar of the Church is decorated with the image of our lady of mount Carmel. The altar is covered with gold leaf.

In 1834 the order of Carmelites left Portugal, like many other religious orders. The building, which housed the monastery, again returned to the family of Braganza, but the Church is still one of the first places visited by tourists.
