An important place in the cultural life of the town of Gabrovo is the Regional historical Museum. It was created on the initiative of the Director Aprelovskiy gymnasium, future Minister of national education, Rico Queen in 1883. The basis for the exposition of the Museum was assembled in the gymnasium, the collection of Antiques.
For more than a century of history Museum its collections expanded significantly to include exhibits Palaeolithic antiquity (IV-VI centuries BC), the period of the First and Second Bulgarian kingdoms, and Turkish rule, Renaissance, industrial lifting and the present day.
Currently the Museum complex is situated in the former building of the Bulgarian national Bank. Beautiful massive multi-storey building was built in 1904 by architect Nikolai Lazarov. For the needs of the Museum, the building was reconstructed.
The Assembly of the complex has more than 90 thousand exhibits, among which were found in the life of primitive people, numismatic collection (including the first Bulgarian banknote 20 leva), the second collection of traditional and urban clothing and accessories, and a rich collection of furniture, busts of two prominent Industrialists of Gabrovo – Ivan Kolchev Kalashnov and Pencho Semov, a collection of materials on industrialization and much more.
