Park Malang" is located on the banks of the river Barwon river in the suburbs of Geelong Newtown. The Park, established in 1973, is full of amazingly beautiful lakes and valuable environmental wetlands. The total area of Balanga" - 81 thousand sq. m.
Once the land belonged to captain foster Fyans who bought it in 1845. He built an estate called "Bellbird Balang" in memory of a young man-the aborigine, who accompanied captain in the early years of the founding of Geelong. Land was used mainly for cattle grazing, as were low-lying and subject to flooding. In 1959, the City Council of Newtown has reserved this land for a public Park. In September 1970, a plan was adopted for the establishment of the Park. Some works were carried out using the labour of unemployed in the framework of the programme for employment of the rural population. In August 1973 the Park "Balang" that cost the city $81, 5 thousand, was officially opened by the mayor of Newtown and representatives of the government of Victoria.
The Park broke a large lake with a depth up to 80 cm In the center of the lake had three Islands, two of which can be accessed by a pedestrian bridge. Today the Park is home to several species of birds - swans, pelicans, Eurasian coot, dark partridge, Pacific black duck, Mallard, pied cormorants and gulls. In 2007, the Park held a series of restoration works, in particular removed the stone fencing of the lake to give it a more similarity with a natural pond.
