The Museum of the city of Gomel was opened in the historical building of the "Hunting Lodge" of the estate ensemble of count N. P.Rumyantsev in 2009. The year 2009 was declared the "Year of the Native Land" in all Belarusian cities. Therefore, this year it was decided to create the Museum of the history of his native city.
The Museum of the city of Gomel is a research and educational center dedicated to the study and systematization of information about the history of Gomel. Collected here are some interesting exhibits on the Gomel region from ancient times to the present day. The Museum presents permanent exhibitions: the Interiors of aristocratic town house (end of XIX – early XX century); History of Gomel from ancient times to the early twentieth century; walking through the old Gomel (late XIX – early XX century).
The big help in creation of Museum collections provide the locals. They give Museum old photos and documents postcards from the city of Gomel, dishes, furniture, unique paintings and art objects.
In addition to the permanent exhibitions the Museum hosts various exhibitions of painters, sculptors, craftsmen. It hosts meetings with artists and writers, lectures, conducted extensive educational work among the youth and students, hosts festivals, master-classes.
The Museum of the city of Gomel takes part in the international action "Night of Museums" held in all European cities to promote museums among young people. One summer night of the museums participating in the event, open to the public and organizes theatre shows on historical themes.
