Franciscan Church Hofkirche was built 1553-1563, at the behest of the Emperor Ferdinand I as a mausoleum for his grandfather Maximilian I.
On the marble sarcophagus of a statue of the Emperor, kneeling. 24 relief of the sarcophagus depict scenes from the life of Emperor Maximilian. His tomb is surrounded by 28 bronze statues depicting his ancestors. The statues were cast in 1550-ies. They are taller than a man. One of the statues depicts father-in-law Maximilian - Charles the Bold, the other - Clovis, king of the Franks.
Actually the sarcophagus empty – body of the deceased Emperor rests in the small town of Lower Austria.
In the Silver chapel of the Church are the tombs of Archduke Ferdinand II and his favorite wife, Filipinas Welser.
