The Church of the Vernicle in the city of Irkutsk is an Orthodox Church, located in the historical centre of the city on the street Sukhe Bator, Irkutsk Kremlin. The Church is one of the first stone buildings of Irkutsk.
Unfortunately, the first wooden Church of the Savior has not survived to the present day. It was erected in 1672, almost in the center of Irkutsk Kremlin. In August 1716, the Church burned down. The Central composition shows the story of Christ's baptism in the Jordan river, while the left talks about the rituals of baptism, most likely, the local Buryat population, and the right shows the composition of the group of persons who were present at the ceremony of communion with the saints. On the southern wall of the temple depicts the saints in whose honour the Church was consecrated and its chapels. Immediately under the eaves of the quadrangle can be seen Nikola of Myra, and lower St. Mitrophan of Voronezh.
In 1931 the Church was closed. At various times it was used as a cobbler shop, a communal apartment and office various organizations. In 1960, the question was raised about the demolition of the temple. But instead to demolish the Church, architect of the city of orange from Moscow began its reconstruction. In the same year the Church received the status of a monument of national importance.
