Aquarium Sea world was founded on 2 October 1992, when the Governor of Jakarta, Mr. Viigo Attarine, laid the cornerstone to mark the start of building a house for undersea life. Today's Sea world is the largest aquarium in Southeast Asia. The building with adjoining buildings and territories covers an area of over three hectares, the main building is about 4, 5 thousand sq m of multiple exposures.

The aquarium concept is rooted in the mentality of the Maritime powers in the world that is made up more of water than of land. Thread one of 17,000 Indonesian Islands extends for more than 5000 kilometers and forms 81000 kilometers of coastline, framed by coral reefs, famous for its biological diversity. Aquarium Sea world is wide open window, giving everyone an opportunity to see and learn more about precious and fragile underwater life of Indonesia.

The main objective of the aquarium is pretty simple: to expand the horizons of visitors, entertaining them or providing appropriate educational programs. This is the first marine complex in Indonesia, which uses entertainment-education concept in the expectation that people can simultaneously observe or participate in underwater adventures and to improve their understanding of living beings and their nature, which ultimately lead to an understanding of their enduring role for the environment. The mission of the aquarium consists of three components: education, recreation, and environmental protection.

In the aquarium, Sea world runs an educational program called "Learning to Sea world, which was developed specifically to support the school curriculum in biology and gives comprehensive knowledge about the marine world students of any age. The program started in August 1994 and is popular with schools across the country. In addition, the aquarium specialists visit schools to educate students about the marine world. Some outreach programs are implemented with the sponsorship.
