Catholic Church St. Peter in Gallicantu built in the memory of man's sin and the suffering of God. Place on the Eastern slope of mount Zion, where she stands, given name, derived from the Latin galli cantum ("crow"). Tradition holds that here was the Palace of the high priest Caiaphas, in the dungeon where Jesus Christ spent the night before his execution. Here the Apostle Peter three times denied Christ before the cock crowed.
This tells all four Gospels. During the last Supper Peter swore to Christ that he is ready to Him and in prison, and to death (bas-relief on the doors of the Church shows Jesus and Peter at this point). Suddenly, what words can become reality: Christ is arrested, the disciples fled. Peter is terrible. Yes, he came after arrested Jesus to the Palace of Caiaphas, but just quietly sat by the campfire, wormed among the people. And suddenly a terrible threat, identified him: "but a certain maid beheld him as he sat by the fire, and earnestly looked upon him, said, this man was with Him. But he denied Him, saying, woman, I know Him not" (Luke 22:56-57).
That's right – novi Non illum ("I don't know Him" in Latin) is called statuary in the Church yard. The stage of renunciation is depicted with remarkable accuracy: the woman-servant, Peter, pretending parting hands, the back hangs a Roman soldier, and on the column a rooster crows.
This cock everywhere. Visible from a distance its gilded figure on the black cross on the Church dome. He is on the gates, doors, painting inside the temple: Jesus in chains looks at Peter (an episode described by Luke), and behind the cock.
The Church of St. Peter and reminds about the suffering of Jesus. She was built in 1931 and is very young by Jerusalem standards, standing on the stones of the Byzantine Church of the V century. Under the ground there are not only walls, but also the caves of the Second Temple period. Such spaces often served as the tanks were the norm for many homes the Roman era. But the cellars of the Palace of Caiaphas could be used as a prison. The camera, which may have put Jesus, is actually the oubliette, where the prisoner was lowered on a rope.
On the spot where stands the Church, in the nineteenth century were excavated: one can see the remains of houses, baths, water supply. Excavations have revealed and a wide stone road descending into the valley of Kidron. Apparently, the road connected the upper city with the lower during the times of the First Temple. Many assume that Jesus after the last Supper went to Gethsemane. Through the same Jesus was led back to the priest Caiaphas. These same steps, stealthily, followed by Teacher Peter toward his sin.
However, realizing what he's done, Peter immediately sincerely and fully repent – "And he went out and wept bitterly" (Matt 26:75). Jesus not only forgave him, but after His resurrection confirmed the purpose of the Apostle, "feed My sheep" (Jn 21:16). Committed a terrible sin, but the repentant Peter became the first Bishop of Rome, the very stone on which stands the Church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it" (Matt 16:18).
