In the 1930s. during the construction of a giant dam in the town of Uglich and the creation of the Uglich reservoir the old part of the city, situated on the banks of the Volga, was in the flood zone and went under water. Most of the buildings in flooded areas had to destroy. Houses, temples and the entire Holy Trinity monastery were blown up. But those who were responsible for the demolition of houses, the bell tower of St. Nicholas's blow did not, and the water began to rise. When the surface waters of the Uglich reservoir covered the city, the bell tower and left to rise above it. It was decided not to touch, leaving as a navigation mark.
