The Church of the ascension is located in the town of Kalyazin, on the street of Engels, 1. It was built in 1783. The original idea, it was a cemetery Church, belonging to St. Nicholas (Nicholas) Cathedral. It was built when the cemetery of St. Nicholas parish was transferred from the Cathedral to a place more distant from the city centre. In the cemetery were buried eminent calasanti, clergy, merchants, intellectuals, commoners.

Originally the temple was one throne – in honor of the ascension. Over time to the Church were added another two chapels: Macarius of Kalyazin and Tikhvin. In Macarius the chapel was kept the icon of St. Macarius with the relics, in Tikhvin is a highly revered icon of the Theotokos of Tikhvin is a list of the famous miraculous icon.

The main scope of the ascension temple was 5-tiglium. The facades of the side chapels were decorated in "eclectic" style, with elements of Gothic revival, which was very popular in the II half of XIX century. Impressive majestic 3-ahyana the bell tower, made in the style of "classicism". It is richly decorated with paired columns, rustication and pediments. Slim tall spire – the final element of the structure. Like, it is designed to overlap with the bell tower of St. Nicholas Cathedral, dressed in the same style, which now stands in the middle of the Uglich reservoir, over a flooded part of Kalyazin.

In the Soviet years the Church of the ascension was abolished. It was the bakery, and the place of the ancient cemetery there was the stadium. The Church gradually fell into disrepair, and only since the 1990s, has begun his new life. Still in a state of disrepair is another Church building – likely cemetery chapel at the Holy gates, not survived to the present time. Lost and interiors of the Church.

The temple itself is already mostly restored, although work remains little. However, in the restored Church held worship, is remarkable – not in the aisle, and in the Central part.

In 2009 South of the temple was a monument dedicated to the victory, which was won by Russian soldiers in 1609 under the Kalyazin over the Polish-Lithuanian regiments. The authors of the monument were made by the sculptors A. and E. G. Komlev And Antonov. Funds were raised by citizens. Troops of the invaders looted and destroyed Kalyazin, and this victory for kalasina is not only a glorious event in the history, but also an act of revenge. On the plaque is carved the name of the leader of the Russian troops – Prince Mikhail Skopin-Shuisky, contains the names and the Polish-Lithuanian commanders – Zboriv and Sapieha. The symbolism of the monument is very clear – the eagle, symbolizing our country – on the banners of defeated the Polish-Lithuanian troops. Below on the stone slab is a portrait of Skopin-Shuisky.
