The póthia is the capital, main port, and the cultural and financial center of the Greek island of Kalymnos. It is located on the South coast of the island in a picturesque natural Bay.
Because of the constant threat of pirate attacks of the islanders (and Kalymnos is no exception), as a rule, preferred to live away from the coast in remote areas. By the 19th century, the threat has been significantly reduced and the islanders began to actively explore the coastal land. So in 1850 and founded the pothia city changes, which later became the capital of the island, replacing its predecessor – the Choir.
Today Póthia is a popular tourist center with excellent infrastructure. Here you will find a superb selection of accommodation, as well as plenty of cozy restaurants and taverns (most concentrated in the waterfront district, where you can relax, enjoying the excellent local cuisine with a wide choice of dishes of fresh fish and seafood.
The póthia is an incredibly beautiful city with full of elegant neoclassical mansions, interesting museums and beautiful temples. Among the main attractions of Pothia and its environs it is worth noting the Archaeological Museum of Kalymnos, the Ethnographic Museum, the Maritime Museum, the monastery of St. Sava, the Church of St. Nicholas was built in the 19th century, the Church of Christ the Saviour with a silver dome and marble iconostasis by the famous Greek sculptor Annalisa of Halepas. Deserves special attention and located between Pota and Hora castle Pen (better known as the castle Chrysoparia), built by the knights Hospitaller in the 15th century. Nearby is the cave of the Seven Virgins.
Aka same in the port boat, you will be able to make a short journey along the scenic coast of Kalymnos, and along the way visit the cave of Kefalos with impressive stalactites, which you can reach only by sea.
