Malwathu Maha Viharaya is one of the oldest Buddhist Sangha (community) of the monastic order Siam Nikaia. Situated on a lake, where is the temple of the Tooth relic in Kandy, Malwathu Maha Viharaya consists of two structures made for the accommodation of the monks. First - Uposatha Viharaya - also called Polamalu Viharaya and the second Pushparam Viharaya - called Malwathu Viharaya and is a newly built octagonal building. The older Polamalu Viharaya, as they say, was built in the late 15th or early 16th century by king Sensomotor Vikramabahu.

Historians suggest that Vikramabahu was built 86 other monasteries for the monks of the brotherhoods Malwathu and Asgiri Viharaya. Malwathu Maha Viharaya was originally built for housing three people. Sangaraja Access was intended for the great monk Weliwita of Caracara Tepo, Sebituane Access and Polamalu Viharaya were built for the head monk Sebituane Tepo, and Access to Honey - for the teacher of the king, the Raja Guru. Today, as the number of monks is steadily growing, in Malwathu Maha Viharaya live the entire Executive Board of the monks Karak city Maha Sangha Sabha. Maha Nyack lives there, as the head priest of the monastery, and one of the defenders of the Tooth. The other two guardian also live here. There are other religious figures living in the monastery, such as the Keeper of the laity Jiyada Nilame.
