Leipzig University is one of the oldest universities in Germany and one of the largest scientific centers. In 1409, when more than a thousand students and professors left the University in Prague due to the outbreak of the Hussite wars, their efforts in Leipzig organized a real University Corporation. Here resumed work of the faculty of free art, and such rulers as Wilhelm I Frederick I supported their endeavors, they were assigned a building and funds to the content of the formed University.

One of the first faculty of medicine became, opened in 1415, behind him, almost 30 years later, has become available and legal. Leipzig University had four associations, including Meissen, Polish, Saxon and Frankish. From lands granted to the several electors, the school received its own income and would use them for their needs.

The University library can be called one of the largest and oldest in Germany. Its founder was the Caspar Borner, by bringing together numerous book and manuscript holdings of the monasteries abolished during the reformation. There are about 8700 manuscripts, and 3600 incunabula, 173 thousands of original manuscripts-originals. A special place in the University of Leipzig take several Museum collections: Ancient and Egyptian museums, natural science collections and the Museum of musical instruments.

This ancient "temple of science" currently has 14 faculties and more than 150 institutions. Students of the University of Leipzig was one of the most famous personalities of the past, including such poets as gotthold Lessing and Johann Goethe, composers Richard Wagner and Robert Schumann, philosophers Friedrich Nietzsche, Gottfried Leibniz and Friedrich Schlegel.
