Once upon a time in the centre of Liberec, who at the time was more like not a big town, and village, consisting of several streets, was the cemetery. For ascension prayers for the dead on it was erected a wooden nave Church. In 1579 it was destroyed and built on the already finished basement large stone Church, which was consecrated in the name of St. Anthony the Great. It is made in the Gothic style, consists of three naves, decorated with a tall square tower, which is visible from any point on neighboring streets.
According to local guides, the Church of St. Anthony is the first stone structure in the city of Liberec. And accordingly the first sacral building built of stone blocks.
By the time the new Church to the cemetery was long gone, his place was taken by the streets and alleys, houses and bridges. Thus, the Church of St. Anthony is located near the Central square, so it can be included in any excursion.
The Church suffered from the disaster, so it is often repaired. During the Thirty years ' war it was almost completely destroyed by the Swedes. At the time it was forgotten, as the city already had other, quite entire temples. However, in 1733, with the support of the rich nobles, the temple is rebuilt, and fully extend it and update the interior.
During the Second world war the Church was deprived of its bells: melted them down to the needs of the German army. New bells were installed only in 1957, and in 1976 the Church was presented with an electric mechanism that mimicked the sound.
