In the area of Kemeralti near the market, which is located twenty-two kilometers from the centre of Marmaris, is the mosque of Ibrahim Pasha – another attraction of the city.
Spacious domed mosque of Ibrahim Pasha is a traditional sample of Ottoman architecture and is quite popular among pilgrims. Constructed under the project, which was designed by architect Ibrahim Pasha, and today it is a place of worship for the citizens.
Its construction was completed in 1789. This monument of architecture in the period 1800-1849 attracted the attention of the British, which is very often visited the old city castle.
This mosque is different from the earlier buildings of this kind, and these differences cannot be attributed to European influence. These differences were caused by the need to change anything in the style of mosques that existed for too long. The architect tried to oppose classical Ottoman Turks, but he felt in times of change the need for innovations in the construction of mosques. However, the absence of the architect of self-confidence and ingenuity led to the distortion of the traditional style of the mosque, the work became more artsy and pretentious.
The symbol of the identity of Marmaris – the mosque of Ibrahim Pasha, which towers over the city for several centuries.
